Departmental Information

The department is the base for four undergraduate courses. BA (Hons) English Studies and BA (Hons) Historical Studies are specialist single subject degrees. BA (Hons) Humanities/Social Studies is a multi-subject degree, on which students are able to choose routes combining two or more of the following subjects: art history, economics, English, history, philosophy, politics, social and economic history and sociology. The BA (Hons) Modern Studies is a highly flexible one-year course, open to students who already possess a Diploma of Higher Education or equivalent (such as a sufficient number of Open University credits).

Teaching is by a variety of methods, with an emphasis on developing students working individually or in groups in such skills as oral presentations, report writing, using videos etc. An introduction to aspects of Information Technology is built in to the first year of each course, and there is widespread use of film, television and other audio-visual resources.
